Questions About This Episode

What is Mara Rockliff about?

Today we are going to be talking with Mara Rockliff, author of "Anything But Ordinary Addie – The True Story of Adelaide Hermann, Queen of Magic." The book tells the true story of Adelaide Herman, one of the premier magicians of all time. The story, told as a picture book, brings the reader back almost 150 years until her death in 1932, to tell the fascinating tale of a girl that didn't want to be ordinary, ended up marrying a magician, and even performed one of the most death defying illusions of all time – the extremely dangerous, bullet catching trick. One of the most fascinating things about Addie was her almost complete disappearance from the annals of magic history. I have been a magician since I was twelve years old; performed magic, studied magic and loved magic. When I heard about Mara's book, I consulted with Belinda Sinclair, the most well-respected woman of all things female in magic. She explained to me who Addie was and how important a figure she was in magic history. Needless to say, I couldn't wait to read "Anything But Ordinary," a book that tells the world about Adelaide Hermann and the influence she has had on magicians since she came along. The book is historical, magical and a great read. It also is empowering to all girls who want to grow up and be magicians and maybe even presidents.
