唐朝时，南诏王阁罗凤遣使到长安朝拜唐朝皇帝，皇帝问：“君在何方？”使者遥指南方，说：“南边云下。”于是朝廷之中，“云南”便成为南诏国的代称，开元十六年（ 728 年）唐朝皇帝封阁罗凤为“云南王”。 忽必烈统一中国后，在这里设“云南行中书省”，“云南”正式作为这个地方的名称确定下来，一直沿用至今。
