在中国的北方，西起阿尔泰山，东到大兴安岭，这一部分我们现在称之为蒙古高原，古人称大漠，或瀚海。这一部分，南边，也就是沿着长城以外，大部分是沙漠，北部是草原。大兴安岭以东，是东北平原。大兴安岭可以看成是蒙古高原的东沿，海拔并不高，才一千多米，所以这两个地方可以看成是连通的。
