从宋朝以后，一直到第二次北伐，南北双方各胜了两次：北方是蒙古人和满族人各入主中原一次，南方是朱玩璋北伐成功一次，革命军北伐成功一次。如果把后来的抗日战争和国共内战也算在内的话，也是南北各胜一次。所以说，在宋朝以前，北方占尽地理、文化、经济方面的优势，南方不是对手；但在宋朝以后，南北双已经不分伯仲了。
