玉门关、阳关以西，古代称为西域。西域由北到南有三条大的山脉：最北端的阿尔泰山、中间的天山、南边的昆仑山。昆仑山以南就是青藏高原。三条山脉中夹着两个盆地：天山以北是准噶尔盆地，天山以南是塔里木盆地。盆地中间是渺无人烟的沙漠。天山和昆仑山终年积雪，无数的冰川融化成河水从山上流下来，注入沙漠，于是就在山脚下滋养出一个又一个的绿洲。
