滇国最早虽然是楚国人建立的，但主体民族还是西南地区的百濮。百濮里后来出现了一个族群，叫昆明。昆明人最早生活在洱海附近，唐宋时期，乌蛮、白蛮兴起，先后在洱海一带建立了南诏国、大理国，昆明人的老家被占了，只好迁移到滇池一带。元朝灭了大理，在滇池附近设置“昆明千户所”，昆明就变成了一个地名。
