Now let’s switch to English. Blend Words or Portmanteau words are found abundantly. A side point worth making here is the fact that the word portmanteau for this use was coined by Lewis Carrol in his ‘Through The Looking Glass’. Alright, let’s begin with a word that I’m sure you all have heard, ‘motel’. Motel is the combination of fragments or rather sounds of the words hotel 🏨 and motor. Motels are primarily roadside hotels for motorists, automobile travelers, in a low building with the parking right outside the building. The next word that is quite interesting is the word ‘brunch’. Brunch is the mixture of the words breakfast and lunch Now in Iran, this late morning meal is not commonly eaten, and is not as popular as the afternoon snack but I don’t think people like me who wake up early in the morning would say no to this wholesome and light meal. I guess everybody knows the next word, sitcom. A situation (+) comedy is A TV series like Friends, How I met your mother, the Big Bang Theory, and the like. You can see how nicely sit and com go together. You ever heard the word humongous. This word is the blend of huge and enormous. The word humongous is usually used humorously and it rather exaggerates the size or strength of an object. Like, a humongous watermelon 🍉. When you travel to the countryside, the fog fascinates you; it wraps a cloud of mystery around the world. All the while you are awestricken. But no such thing in big cities like Tehran. Smoke is everywhere, and the fog turns into smog as soon as it touches the smoke. In a situation like this, if we’re in a car, we just roll up the window and feel a bit sad. There are many blend words, everyone. So I’ll just talk about one more and get out of your hair. You’ve heard the word electrocute. Well, it’s a combination of electricity and execute. When you’re electrocuted, zaboonam lal, you are killed or injured by an electric shock. Like, Jamal was electrocuted last night, when he was trying to change the lightbulb in his bedroom. Guys, these words are different from compound nouns. I’ll talk about them later though. Also, the reason I talked about blend words, next to their being quite interesting, is that knowing different aspects of a word helps you retain a word; Blend words tell the tale of a how a word is formed. This also allows you to make more accurate use of your knowledge. Masalan, if you build a place downtown and call it a motel, it just can’t be. All you had to know to figure this out was simply knowing how the word motel was formed. Again, thanks for listening. Can’t wait to talk to you again guys
