In this special edition of EMSCEP Radio we were on location at the Fairfax Fire Rescue EMS Week Training Symposium . We caught Jose Salizar and Debbie Akers after their Keynote talk on the "Future of EMS" and asked them to summarize their talk. José Salazar , MPH, NRP Deputy Chief of EMS & Training, Loudoun County Fire & Rescue Leesburg, Virginia Chief Salazar has been part of the EMS field for nearly 30 years, as a provider, educator and administrator. He currently serves as the Deputy Chief of EMS & Training for Loudoun County Fire, Rescue and Emergency Management in Leesburg, Virginia. Chief Salazar received his Masters of Public Health Degree in Health Systems Management and Policy in EMS from New York Medical College. Among the many EMS /FIRE projects, publications and presentations for which Chief Salazar can be recognized, he worked with the NREMT Board of Directors to gain approval of the ARC's Emergency Response national program; he helped achieve CoAEMSP accreditation for fire-based Paramedic programs; served on the National EMS Advisory Council and was a contributing writer for the EMS Educational guidelines for the EMT and Paramedic. Debbie Akers , NRP, ALS Training Specialist Virginia Department of Health - Office of EMS Debbie Akers is a certified Paramedic and the ALS Training Specialist for the Office of EMS. Additionally, she oversees the accreditation process for ALS & BLS programs in Virginia. Prior to her employment with OEMS, she was the Education Coordinator with the Western Virginia EMS Council in Roanoke and Program Director of the New River Valley Training Center. In 2008 she was recognized by the National Association of EMS Educators when she was awarded the HERO award, a recognition given to one EMS Educator each year who is nominated by peers and students for their passion and dedication to EMS Education. In 2010 she was awarded the Virginia Governors EMS Award for Outstanding Prehospital Educator. Her EMS career began with Christiansburg Rescue Squad where she is now a Life Member. Additionally, she holds honorary membership with Virginia Tech Rescue Squad. A National Registry Paramedic, she has devoted her career to EMS education. Debbie is the mother of two and a 'Nana' to her four beautiful granddaughters.
