Or a complete asshole? Or you thought they may have been the spawn of satan? I want to talk to you about this situation today because I know it is not easy. We've all had the boss who is completely terrible or we have had a spouse or significant other who was working for the devil. It's like the Devil's Wears Prada situation LOL When we are working for a boss who is total ass we sometimes have to be the leader that they aren't. And we have to what some people refer to as manage up. We have to do this in a very careful way. We don't want to be offensive, we don't want to be rude, we don't want to be on their level. We want to be the bigger person and be that leader. 12 Action Items 1) Observe Pause, slow down and just observe 2) Don't jump to conclusions 3) Not to let your work suffer At a certain point, either you are going to depart or they are going to leave. You don't want to leave or have a new leader as a bottom performer. 4) Document The intention is not screw somebody over but rather if we need to go to HR we have reference points to track the situation. 5) Keep emails 6) Have really open, honest communication Attempt to have that conversation 1:1 and on your own. However, if it is something like harassment this may not be your best choice. Rather, if they are just being rude you might be able to have this conversation on your own. Ask questions in case you are misunderstanding, this will also keep the conversation non confrontational. 7) Being that leader You may not have direct reports. You may not be in a formal manager position. However, the reality is we are the more mature ones than the leaders we are working for so we need to set a better example than what they are capable of setting. 8) Taking the high road Do what you know is correct even if someone else is doing something wrong. 9) Being the better / bigger person 10) Try to determine what motivates them and what sets them off 11) Contributing to and celebrating success 12) If you need to jump ship: Do your research. Determine interview questions that you can ask while you're in an interview with your next future boss. For show notes go to: Thank you so much for listening.
