Questions About This Episode

What is Answering Your Questions! How To Stand Out In Applications / Should I Become A Software Developer / Etc. about?

Let's answer some of your questions! Question 1: How do you prepare for aptitude tests? If you're thinking like the SAT or ACT there are practice tests online you can take. If you're thinking about tests to determine what career would be the best fit, there is really no way to prepare for those but just be really honest with yourself while taking them. Question 2: How do you make your resume relevant? One you want to make sure it's specific to the job you're applying for in the right industry. Think about the job you're applying for, in what industry and put that relevant information in your resume. So when the recruiter or hiring manager is looking at your resume they can clearly see you have the experience you looking for. For example for sales professionals you want to include your sales goal or quota, for example, 102% to goal. Make it pretty but have content. Some resume templates only allow for 1-2 bullets under each job which likely won't be enough information. Ensure your background itself is relevant to what you're applying for and if it's not figure out a way to bridge that gap. Let's make sure you're applying to roles that appropriate (think years of experience here). Be one of the first people to apply. Apply directly to the role on the company website. You can also reach out to the recruiter or hiring manager on LinkedIn. Set up job alerts on Google Jobs. Question 3: How to position yourself well with recruiters after being retrenched? I'm assuming here that means being laid off and not being fired. Being laid off is very common. Be honest and brief/to the point. Question 4: What do I owe my current boss and team once I've decided to start looking for a new job? Amazing team, resignation will blindside the team. I don't recommend sharing you are looking to leave until you are ready to resign. Question 5: How to decide whether or not to get into management? Would be better pay, next step in career, are there non management ways to further your career? Do you have the desire to coach, mentor, lead, manage, discipline, hire, fire, etc? You'll have to do all of those things! Money can certainly be a motivator for sure. You can definitely further your career without taking on leadership responsibilities. Question 6: How do I ignore the allure of becoming a software developer? Can do developer bootcamp for 9 months and make $85k. You don't have to ignore the allure! I would take a webinar or find some videos online to learn what software development looks like. Ask yourself would I want to do this every single day? I would also ask hiring managers on LinkedIn if they would want to hire someone from the bootcamp you're looking at. Question 7: How to score an interview when there are so many applications? How to stand out in applications? Go back to question 2, all of that applies. You want to be one of the firsts. Set up job alerts on LinkedIn, Google and Indeed. Review job description, adjust resume accordingly and honestly.
