Professor of cybernetics Kevin Warwick talks about augmenting human capabilities, the exciting field of robotics, and what it means to be a cyborg. His pioneering research into robots with biological brains and enhancing human physiological functioning with electronic devices has brought the science fiction future into the present. Kevin Warwick is no stranger to using himself as a guinea pig for his research. He describes an experiment, which previously had only been tested on chickens, involving him undergoing a two hour operation by a neurosurgeon to implant a 'brain gate' system in him, linking his nervous system with a computer. The implant in his arm had wires running to a connector. A computer monitored the signals between his brain and arm. Kevin's brain learned to recognise the system of pulses emitted during the three months of the experiment. He was able to turn on lights and control a wheelchair via the implant. "Humans, we're pretty limited in what we can do, let's face it, mentally particularly. We just have a bunch of brain cells. And the possibility of enhancing our brain, our mental capabilities, I think is enormous." - Professor Kevin Warwick Read the Transcript via Open Transcripts --- Follow the conversation on Twitter using Rate & Review the Virtual Futures Podcast Support Virtual Futures on Patreon Find out more: --- Credits Produced by Virtual Futures Recorded & Edited by Luke Robert Mason Music: Death Simstim (Music Track Only) by 0rphan Drift --- Follow Virtual Futures on Social Media Twitter Facebook Instagram Medium SoundCloud YouTube --- Our Recording Equipment (Affiliate Links) RØDE Procaster Broadcast Dynamic Microphone RØDE PSM1 Microphone Shock Mount RØDE DS1 Desktop Microphone Stand Stagg 3m High Quality XLR to XLR Plug Microphone Cable Zoom H6 Handy Recorder
