Did you grow up in a place that you didn't appreciate until later in life? A place that your father chose, a place you didn't understand, a place you couldn't wait to escape from, only to find, many years later, that you too love that place, and your father was right all along? Yes me too. Canada turns 150 on July 1st . To honour this day, Episode 18 celebrates both the east and west coasts of Canada with Grant Lawrence - music journalist, musician, writer and story teller. Grant shares stories from Desolation Sound, a small inlet on the Coast of British Columbia, a place he once loved, then hated, then loved again. Desolation Sound was home to the K'omoks people before Europeans arrived. It has seen loggers, fishermen, oyster farmers, draft dodgers, hippies, hermits, tourists, Americans, Canadians... all there to basque in the beauty of the place. This episode is also a nod to our fathers, those guys who for both Grant and me, on opposite sides of the country, taught us how to love a place through its stories, sounds, smells and tastes. They are our Fathers of Confederation, so to speak. I've never been to Desolation Sound. Canada is just so, very big. But Grant takes us there, sharing the good, the bad and the naked truths of life in Desolation Sound.
