Learn how to JournalSpeak ➡️ LEARN HOW: In this episode, I explore a question that has been coming into my inbox for years: why are autoimmune diseases happening, and is there anything we can do to influence the course of them? I am not a medical doctor and I am not claiming that mindbody work changes blood markers or diagnoses. But over many years of working with people suffering from chronic symptoms, I have observed something remarkable. Again and again, people who come to this work with autoimmune diagnoses begin to experience fewer and fewer symptoms. Their charts may still contain the diagnosis, but their bodies stop flaring. This raises an important question—if the symptoms are real, and they absolutely are, why is the body producing them in the first place? In this conversation, I look at autoimmune disease through the lens of nervous system regulation and the brain’s powerful drive to protect us. When the nervous system is stuck in a chronic state of threat, the body can begin expressing symptoms in ways that feel structural and deeply physical. I talk about how pain and inflammation can function as protective signals from the brain, and why learning to regulate the nervous system can change the internal environment in which these symptoms exist. This episode invites you to consider a different framework for understanding autoimmune illness—and to recognize the surprising power we may have to influence our physical and emotional health.
