Show Notes: Stay on beat. The most important thing is being in beat. the idea is you use the music for inspiration to help you create new ideas and moves, not to just randomly dance to the track. You cannot learn everything from youtube . YouTube has it's good points. It is free for a start but it also has a lot of videos teaching you the incorrect info and ways to do things. There are some great videos out there but to really improve it is good to be a part of a community wether it is going to a class or being a part of an online community where you can ask questions and get feedback and corrections. Street dance. The term Street Dance a lot think that it is a style of dance. When I havce asked people before I have said - what style do you do, and they have said "street dance" or just "street" which deeply irritates me but hey! My next question then would be "oh ok what styles do you do" the answer is oftern with confusion. Street Dance is not a style it is an umbrella term for loads of different styles. Every style that is within the street dance has it's own vocabulary, history, style of dress etc. When I fist started I thought Hip Hop was the umbrella term - nope! Breakdance - This one is similar to the Street Dance one. The media when Breaking first cam,e out called it breakdasnce because it sounded better and could sell more that way. The other correct terms are Bboying or Bgirling. The B in bboy or bgirl stands for break. Supprisingly enough. Different peopel have different definitions for what break means. Some people wpould say that break means when you push your body to the limit to breaking point. Some people use it as a term of aggression or it refers to the break in the record. So the music would play, the band would sing and then the breakdown would come in and that is when the dancers used to go off and do their thing, so people referred to them as bboys or bgirls. Different people have different definitions depending on where they grew up, who taught them and also their experiences. That is why it is good to ask questions and take what you hear with a pinch of salt and continue your journey Breakdance is hip hop dance - A lot of people think they they are separate styles, well they are, but they are from the same culture. 2 different dance styles, 2 different types of music but under 1 culture called Hip Hop. So when peopl say I dance Hip Hop, that doesnt explain much. Breaking is the more phisical street dance style including moves like teh backk spin, windmill, headspin etc. Hip Hop Socail dance is a whole bunch of hip hop social dances done to hip hop club music. I say club music because they are dances that people did when they went out to a club or a party. Body popping - is another term that gets around like a bad smell. The correct name is Popping. Dub step dance - Dub step dance is not a style of dance . It is basically waving, popping, tutting and gliding done in a slightly different way to dubstep music. You do not have to be anybody else. Be yourself. When I first got into street dance I used to try and copy what other good street dancers were wearing, I even wore visors like mr wiggles. Until I saw him they had no real purpose in my wardrobe. It took me a while to really understand that I just need to be myself and bring what I have to the table. To be really good you have to practice - Some people see dance competitions and think they can learn that stuff in 2 weeks or a few months. Even the creators and pioneers consider themselves students of teh dance, always learning. The journey of street dance is life long, so if you go into it looking for quick results you will most likely be disappointed. If you want o improve you need to Practice your foundations. Every pioneer/creator I have asked has said "if you want to improve practice your foundations". A lot of people will travel far across the world to learn from a pioneer just to ask "what do i need to do to improve". Foundations are what make up a style of street dance. The techniques, rhythm patterns, vocabulary - doing a move the way it is meant to be done is the secret to improving. It is not easy which is why a lot of people will stop dancing because they don't want to put the hard work it takes to be really successful. Links ss4a.com/1 ss4a.com/ask ss4a.com/special
