In 2003 DARPA research scientist Sam Sheperd was diagnosed with terminal cancer. Chemotherapy and radiation were not even options. He tasked his team with finding out which animals do not get cancer and why. They found that there were five animals that all shared a common molecule in their chemistry. Pink flamingos, sharks, salmon, elephants and the naked mole rat. That molecule is astaxanthin, an extremely powerful antioxidant.
