As human beings, we naturally long for connection. Connections that lead to friendships and romantic bonds require work. That work starts with communication, curiosity and compassion. When either one of those elements leave a friendship, it can be the beginning of that bond falling apart. Disconnecting from a friend can feel like a break-up. I think of friendships as safe spaces where people are free to express emotions without judgement. Losing that safe space can be painful.
