By 24, Julio Briones had 2 clothing stores, a beautiful condo, and just about anything else that would deem him a success. He would've never thought that seeing a movie with a friend would change the trajectory of his life. His bright future was quickly exchanged for a 39 year prison sentence. The average person in America has a 1 in 28 chance of getting arrested. In 2002, Julio was one of them and, like most people, he wasn't prepared. He previously believed, "it could never happen to me". His lack of preparation led him into a situation that he calls, "more traumatic than my deployment to Kuwait". From personal experience he learned that the average defendant only spends an average of 7 minutes with their public defender. Within 3 hours of incarceration, Julio found himself in a fighting a man for his shoes. Prison was an uphill battle for Julio. This was the driving force for him to learn the law and fight to get his sentence reduced. An older prisoner asked him, "Do you want to be right? Or do you want to go home?". This led to the realization that he must use the system in place to find a way to reduce his sentence. Ultimately, after 6 attempts, Julio was successful and served just 10 years in prison. Julio Briones applies what he has learned in his personal and professional life to help others get prepared and get through what could be the most trying time of their life, as well as their family's. He believes that the only obstacles in life are the ones we put there, and people need to let go of the crutches of victimization if they ever want to redefine and achieve success for themselves. Today, Julio lives with his cherished wife and their 2 children in NJ where he is the CEO of the Briones Consulting Group, the author of the self-help book " Redefining Success " and of " Surviving Arrest: The Complete Guide " and a Motivational Speaker.
