Questions About This Episode

What is Ep. 115: Engineering Interplanetary Missions about?

Edit "Rocket science" has moved well beyond rocketry in the 21st century. Even the Jet Propulsion Lab in California hasn't done any rocket science in the last several decades, focusing entirely on robotic space missions instead. One of the big challenges with space programmes today is designing and managing complex systems, where spacecraft can autonomously make decisions in uncertain environments. Anne Devereaux joins Pavan Srinath on Episode 115 of The Pragati Podcast to share how NASA and JPL plan and manage interplanetary missions. The Pragati Podcast is a weekly talkshow on public policy, economics and international relations hosted by Pavan Srinath . Ann Devereaux is the manager for spacecraft system engineering at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory and was the lead flight system engineer for the upcoming Mars 2020 rover. Previously, she worked on the Mars Science Laboratory Curiosity Rover project, ultimately becoming lead system engineer for the flight system and fault protection, and deputy lead for the Entry, Descent and Landing team. Ann is an electrical engineer by training, and has spent close to three decades in various roles at JPL. This episode was recorded during Ann's visit to Bangalore that was made possible thanks to the United States Consulate in Chennai .
