The clitoris is the only part of the human body designed for pleasure. It has a whopping 8,000 nerve endings, twice as many as a male penis, yet in many cultures little girls are forced into genital cutting or Female Genital Mutilation. In Egypt around 40 Million women and girls are survivors of FGM. Egypt, has the largest population of FGM survivors in the entire world.Why is that? Why does this surgery take place at such a large scale?Some say it’s fueled by female oppression and the desire to control women, others say it’s cultural norms and parents feeling pressured to conform.I had the honor of sitting down with Dr. Amr Seifeldin & Dr. Reham Awwad, the founders of Restore FGM center located in Mohandessin in Cairo, Egypt.Dr. Amr Seifeldin is one of a handful of doctors in the entire world who are trained to perform clitoral restorative surgeries and the only doctor in the MENA region specialized in FGM treatments.
