Everyone was saying he’d progressed to something they’d never seen before. It felt like a myth had formed before most of us had even seen him surf. A few months later at the Queensland titles in Coolum, I saw it. A frontside re-entry carve in the face — something I’d never seen before, and still not sure I’ve seen since.
