Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has been spreading around the country but for years many BJJ enthusiasts could not find a school with a black belt professor teaching nearby. Some found an association that provided a good and solid structured system where remote students could still evolve and progress. However, we all know that learning from videos only is not ideal, legit, and how BJJ is supposed to be taught and learned. We have seen many people like Steve Young that did the right thing. First, he didn't let the challenges posed by distance stop him from pursuing his goals. Second, he and I found a way to have a legit program where he would come consistently to our HQ and on top of that I would travel to his school 4-5 a year spending a good amount of time training, teaching, mentoring him and his students. So it is doable, and necessary in situations like that when you can't train with a black belt full time due to distance and location. As long as you get enough solid instruction, guidance, structured curriculum, and of course reserve time to travel or to have your coach visit you (as we have been doing with Oklahoma Combat Sports), I believe that BJJ can reach the whole world, and you can become a black belt as well. Disclaimer: Steve went through the Black Belt graduation process in Connecticut like all of our students have to. In his process, he rolled for 90 minutes non-stop in a shark-tank setup against all brown and black belts from our association in rounds of 3 minutes. Every time facing a rested and fresh brown or black belt. No shortcuts, no easy ways, way harder than you can imagine. Keep Calm, and Train BJJ! Send us your opinions.
