: COVID-19: Transformational Growth in the Time of Great Crisis In 2005, I went to New Orleans and Mississippi to volunteer in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. I learned many powerful lessons from my time down there: Crisis brings out both the very worst and the very best in humankind. There were those taking advantage of the chaos for their own personal gain; and there were many more who were giving all they’ve got to be of support and service to total strangers. Some people lost everything they had materially (in Mississippi, coastal homes were swept into the sea leaving only a cement slab of a platform remaining), and some people’s homes were spared. Some people were devastated, and others were faring quite well through it all. Yet, it wasn’t the amount that was taken that made the difference, it was entirely the difference in mindset that they held. Those focused on all that was lost were miserable, and those that were grateful for their lives and/or their families felt renewed by this crisis. Which leads to: Crisis causes people to reassess their priorities as they come to see what really matters. And finally, times of crisis are incredibly fertile opportunities to create rapid, deep, and lasting transformational change; both in your own personal life, as well as, on a larger collective level.
