She started performing in the Melbourne pub circuit at seventeen years old. In 1998, she formed the band Red Raku and recorded two albums along with producer and drummer Marty Brown—who is now her husband, producer and music manager. Her memoir, Your Own Kind of Girl, is an exploration into her own inner critic that pulls no punches. In this interview we talk about the power of naming your doubts, searching for a higher power in order to stay alive, the importance of how books get into our lives, the most useful experience of Clare’s life, the need to pass on little acts of kindness, how truth is the most important gift we have to offer, dealing with death at a young age, and the cost of telling a story.
