Shame, Part 2

Daniel and Leggy finish out their two-part conversation on shame in this episode, touching on why we default to shutting down shame with bad behavior and why just sitting with shame can be difficult but important to our personal growth. JUMP STRAIGHT INTO: (02:57) - Daniel’s shame around acting - “I have a lot of shame about having to do some work to survive.” (04:55) - Numbing shame with sex, drugs, etc. - “It sucks to feel shame, so obviously you're going to double down on some sort of pleasure seeking situation to just fucking shut it down, whether it be sex, drugs, you know, whatever your poison is, to just turn it off.” (05:31) - Using shame to check in with yourself - “It's very, very fucking hard to sit in the shame, just sit in it, which is the thing to do ultimately to shine a light on it.” (06:04) - Patterns of how we deal with shame - “As a kid, I'd get told off for stuff, right? So I'd be shamed, which is why there's an old pattern in me which made me not want to tell you, because I didn't want to get shamed.” (06:55) - Shaming others ignores your own humanity - “It's so difficult to not judge, to actually love someone when they fucked up.” (10:25) - As religion has receded, so has redemption - “Once you're thrown out, there isn't a pathway back. That's one thing that's missing from our current culture.” (15:23) - Not being honest about who you are - “It's very weird for me to really be totally honest about what I like.” (19:39) - Men don’t have the same healthy outlets as women - “There's a great kind of culture of women taking care of themselves, pampering themselves, they go into a kind of selfcare mode and we don't really have those rituals.” (22:21) - Shame is inevitable - “You're never a master of this.
