Many people worldwide are affected by tragic events. If we do not address the violent events and conflicts, the issues in the society only grow. How to overcome historic traumas and heal society? What role do the public monuments take in our historic memory? Three distinctive speakers share their personal stories and insights on this topic. Armand Volkas is a psychotherapist and Registered Drama Therapist. He directs Healing the Wounds of History, a therapeutic approach in which theatre techniques are used to work with groups of participants from two cultures with a common legacy of violent conflict and historical trauma. Esther Shalev-Gerz is internationally recognized for her seminal contributions to the field of art in the public realm and her consistent investigation into the construction of memory, history, the natural world, democracy and cultural identities. Timothy Ryback is a director of the Institute for Historical Justice and Reconciliation in The Hague. In this podcast, he discusses the meaning of monuments in society.
