Questions About This Episode

What is Our Lewes about?

January 2016 Podcast | Home | Hello and welcome to the January 2016 Podcast from Radio Lewes. I'm John Russell and on today's podcast we have news of Westgate Chapel and what's on plus news of activities and new groups for Oyster Project members and also an update on what's going on at Radio Lewes. First up it's news of events at Westgate Chapel. Our ever popular monthly Folk In The Chapel series of concerts gets underway for 2016 on Sunday the 24th of January with Trevor and Michael Curry, John Cave and Jim Ward and Iris Bishop. There will be a Radio Lewes podcast on Spreaker featuring the concert. Big thanks are due to Vic Smith for making these concerts possible. Folk In The Chapel happens every fourth Sunday of the month and is co-hosted by Oyster member Lucy Hendey. You can check out What's On at oysterproject.org.uk Also at Westgate on saturday mornings from 10.30 we have the Chapel Cafe and Food Bank. Everyone is welcome to drop in for tea or coffee. We are working out if there is a demand for snacks and lunches and if so we hope to add these to the mix. We are also looking for volunteer cooks from the community to help out with this social action venture run by the Westgate Trust volunteers. If you are an Oyster Project member you will be interested to know that the drama and performance group is meeting on Wednesday mornings at 10.30 with our volunteer Stephen Hounsell at the helm. It's a great chance to learn new skills, make a noise and have some fun while working on ideas for performances and films we hope to make in the future. Film making will be in conjunction with the new community interest company we are supporting, Screenplayers which will be run Louise and Tara. The aim is to make short films for the various competitions out there and to feature our work online. Oyster members can also sign up for basket making on Tuesday mornings and bring a friend. It's just £10 a session for non-members so come along and get weaving. The convenor of the project is Tara and details will soon be on the web site At the beginning I said there was news for Radio Lewes members and that is indeed the case. We got funding to rebuild the studio at Westgate and by the time you hear this we will hopefully have a new studio booth which is as soundproofed as we can make it. This will mean people can record while others are in the office space which at the moment isn't possible. We are also going to do outreach work with the Parish Podcast concept we have developed. If you are interested in radio work get in touch with Ben via the web site It's where the music matters. The Radio Lewes crew do a great job keeping this important project going and we have some great presenters covering a wide range of music but there's always room for more! The Westgate Trust are developing and repairing the building so there may be some disruption but it's a very good sign. The new board have pledged to set Westgate on a good footing and those of us who are fond of the place wish them all the best. You can check out what the congregation is doing at and what the Trust are doing at That's all for January's podcast, email in any ideas you have via admin@radiolewes.org.uk and we will get back to you. In the meantime keep listening.
