Toen de schrijver Henry James in de 19de eeuw de stad bezocht schreef hij al “Though there are some disagreeable things in Venice there is nothing so disagreeable as the visitors”. Henry James schreef gelukkig over de dingen die hij dan wel ‘agreeable’ vond. Serge Simonart vertelt ook over al die andere beroemde toeristen die over ‘La Serrenisima’ schreven. Charles Dickens ontmoeten we Palazzo Dandolo waar ook Proust en Sand logeerden. We ontmoeten John Ruskin… en natuurlijk Lord Byron.
