In our conversation, Hivemapper explains their formula for achieving this goal. TL;DR Hivemapper plans to go live at the end of 2022. Hivemapper’s outward-facing dash cams (currently on pre-order) will take pictures of local street views. The dash cam’s location is proven through encrypted GPS and via the Helium hotspot network. Helium’s network uses radio signals to provide internet coverage to IoT devices and record data on the Helium blockchain. For privacy, the dash cam owner’s ID and dash cam location are de-identified. Anyone can own part of the Hivemapper mapping network by using the dash cam to earn the mapping network’s native token, HONEY, or by purchasing HONEY on a cryptocurrency exchange. HONEY runs on the Solana blockchain. Hivemapper Inc. builds APIs on top of the mapping network and The Hivemapper Foundation (a 501(c) independent of Hivemapper Inc. personnel) oversees the governance (technical decisions, economic decisions, and licensing) of the Hivemapper mapping network.
