The second edition of LAWcast from the Nordics – a podcast published by DLA Piper – focuses on the trade war between the US and China. DLA Piper representatives from Shanghai, Oslo, Copenhagen, Stockholm and Washington, DC discuss the subject from different perspectives and angles. • What impact is the trade war having on the relationship between China and the Nordics? • What will it take to end the trade war? • Is there a role for the Nordics to play as a moderator or arbitrator? Our special guest in the podcast studio is Qiang Li – better known as LQ – Co-Regional Managing Partner, Asia and Co-Country Managing Partner, China based in Shanghai. From a Chinese perspective, China seems to be more willing to strike a deal than the US, LQ says on the podcast, adding that there might be a need for a trusted middleman, perhaps from one of the Nordic countries. Martin Lavesen, country managing partner in DLA Piper Denmark, and Peter Näslund, country managing partner in DLA Piper Sweden, both express concern about the current situation, but also have hopes for an end to the trade war. They do however see opportunities in the market for Nordic companies as long as the trade war continues. Charlie Dent, senior advisor for DLA Piper, based in our Washington, DC office, and former Republican Party Congressman for the state of Pennsylvania, also takes part in the podcast. He states that the United States are not as focused on trade with China as President Trump, who seems to be fixated with the trade deficit. Kjetil Johansen, partner at DLA Piper Norway and former legal advisor to EFTA, Trade & Public Procurement, closes the podcast with his comments on the interviews with LQ and Charlie Dent, stating that none of the parties can win a trade war, and that it will take a lot of political will from both sides to end the conflict. Unfortunately, things have to get worse before they can get better, Johansen says. LAWcast from the Nordics is hosted by Erik Wold, a journalist and former TV anchor with 25 years of experience with NRK, the Norwegian national broadcaster. He has been responsible for hundreds of debate shows and news transmissions. Erik Wold is the regular host for DLA Piper LAWcast from the Nordics. LAWcast from the Nordics focuses on current issues and topics, keeping you updated on law, politics and the latest development in the markets from a Nordic perspective. Produced by Perplex.no
