Episode 3: Sex in Indian Art

Is sex in Indian art supposed to be scandalous? Is it pornographic? Or does it represent something that is deeper than physicality? We go back in time to explore the various portrayals of sexual union in Hindu temples, scriptures like the Kamasutra, Mughal painting and jain paintings. We will examine the stories behind 'The Perfumed Garden' and the Chandayana. We discuss their meaning, and analyse the association of sex with Gods, kings, female desire, contrasting the depiction of sex in the East and West. We answer questions of why genitalia in association of God is unacceptable, the true purpose of the Kamasutra and many more enlighteming concepts!
