No one conveys the suffering, courage, joy, and spirit of those who dwell in the U.S.-Mexico borderlands better than Pulitzer finalist and master storyteller Luis Alberto Urrea , whether it’s the horror of “The Devil’s Highway” or the allure of La Gloriosa in “The House of Broken Angels.” Urrea, whose father was Mexican and mother was from New York, talks about how the culture wars in his home shaped who he is today, the controversy surrounding the Jeanine Cummins novel “American Dirt,” and his Guggenheim project, a book about his mother's bravery as a Red Cross worker on the World War II frontlines.
