Questions About This Episode

What is EP5: Balance Conversations with Deborah Hutton about?

The Big Fat Myths of Weight Loss "The good thing about science is that it's true whether or not you believe in it." ― Neil deGrasse Tyson. You can't argue with the scientific facts presented in Ruben Meerman's new book Big Fat Myths. In this podcast Ruben busts the myths of diet and weight loss with Deborah and presents the simple truth on using science to achieve your ideal body balance. As a basis for his study, Ruben poses the question – when you lose weight, where does the fat go? " Most people think it turns into energy. Impossible! The correct answer is that 84% of a fat molecule's mass becomes carbon dioxide and the rest becomes crystal clear water. This book blasts weight loss myths out of the water and restores faith in that age-old refrain to simply eat less and move more." When faced with the prospect of a new year's resolution to lose some weight, this well-known physicist turned to science to provide the answers on how to shed the kilos. An avid surfer and native Netherlander, Ruben had noticed that by 43 he had gained a few unwanted kilos. Building on the "atoms in and atoms out" theory, the surfing scientist began carefully studying what he was eating and increased his daily exercise and energy output with walks. And as predicted, he lost weight! So it seems simple and uncomplicated – so why is there a major obesity issue? Through his new book Big Fat Myths, Ruben breaks down the fat issue and applies scientific principles to weight loss.
