DNA testing has changed family history in a way few people could have imagined even twenty years ago. It used to be that most people built a family tree with census records, obituaries, marriage licenses, cemetery stones, and whatever stories had been passed down at reunions or holiday dinners. That kind of research could still uncover surprises, but there were limits. A missing father's name on a birth record might raise questions. A marriage date that did not quite line up with a child's birth might suggest there was more to the story. A cousin no one had ever heard of could appear in a will or an old newspaper clipping. Even then, people could still look away and say, "We may never know." DNA changed that. Now, with one test and a little patience, a person can find half-siblings, unknown cousins, secret adoptions, unexpected ethnic backgrounds, or proof that a long-accepted family story was never true in the first place. What once stayed buried in courthouse files or in the silence of older relatives can now show up on a screen in a matter of days. And when it does, the question is no longer just what the test says. The harder question is what to do with that truth...
