The Smile We Wear

Most soldiers learn to tough it out and keep pushing forward from the very beginning of their journey through the military. On the front lines, we're told again and again that we do what ordinary people can't, that we fight for freedom. We endure the worst humanity has to offer—pushed to our emotional and physical breaking points—and we're constantly reminded that we are the toughest the world has to offer, trained for whatever darkness may come. We bury it deep within ourselves, wear a smile, and pretend to be human, never talking about what we’ve really seen or felt. We swallow our pain, carry it alone, so our friends and families won't have to suffer with us. All anyone ever sees is the medal ceremony—proudly presenting the symbols of our service, our sacrifice, our country—bragging about the victories, never about the scars or the torture we endured to get there. For the rest of a soldier’s life, we suffer in silence, often alone, behind a facade. But some of us find that special person—someone who’s there during the storms, who pulls us back to earth when everything else is chaos. They become our reason to face another day in the sun. This song is about that: the resilience that carries us forward, and the one thing that keeps us fighting—not for the medals, but for that one person who reminds us... Who reminds me! I still have something to fight for. I love you more!
