Welcome to the NYS AHPERD A-Z Health and PE Podcast. In today’s episode we will be discussing Game-Based Pedagogy…one of my favorite topics and its application in related fields and disciplines…in this case U.S. Soccer. Vic and Laura, this is exciting to be discussing the work of Drs. Steve Harvey, Mark Garrison, Jeff Lindauer, and yours truly. Our recent article entitled An Investigation Into U.S. Soccer Coaches’ Perceptions and Use of Play–Practice–Play (see link below) was published in the Journal of Teaching Physical Education (JTPE) in January 2026. Our first guest today is Dr. Steve Harvey who is a world-renowned scholar and pedagogue and his most recent book is co-edited with Dr. Richard Light entitled Applied Positive Pedagogy in Sport Coaching: International Cases. Alongside this recent publication, Dr. Harvey has authored several journal articles focusing on game-based approaches to teaching physical education and coaching. You can learn more about Dr. Harvey’s endeavors while also connecting with him directly on Twitter @drstephenharvey. Our next guest is Dr. Mark Garrison…a Professor of Education and Core Doctoral Research Faculty in the Killgore Research Center at West Texas A&M University. He has a growing portfolio of sport and physical education pedagogy research . A main area of his work concerns the development of research methodologies rooted in the critical realist tradition. Recent publications include, “Critical Research Methodology: A Realist Approach” appearing in the Handbook of Critical Approaches to Politics and Policy of Education, edited by Kenneth J. Saltman and Nicole Nguyen, (Routledge, 2022). He also has an extensive research agenda exploring the nexus between education and technology, including “Confronting the Digital Leviathan in Education: On Cybernetic Pedagogy and Data-Intensive Algorithmic Technologies,” (also appearing in the Handbook of Critical Approaches to Politics and Policy of Education) and his award-winning book, "A measure of failure: The political origins of standardized testing" (SUNY Press).
