In the Himalayas, in the Greater Tibetan world - the lands outside of Chinese occupied Tibet, which have Tibetan include cultures - Buddhism is the main spiritual practice, but before Buddhism came there the lands were shamanistic, and shamanism - often with a veneer of Buddhism - still exists. Padmasambhava was an C8th Buddhist teacher born in Pakistan, who trained with both Buddhist lamas and no-Buddhist shamans, and travelled all over Pakistan, India and Nepal. He was a rekown tantric magician. He went to Tibet and brought Buddhism there, mixing all the tantric Buddhist magic he had mastered and when he went to Tibet he mixed it with the shamanism there, producing the unique magical tradition of Tibetan Buddhism.
