1998年水星奖获奖得主是来自默西塞德的五人乐队Gomez的处女专辑《Bring It On》，在当时众多吉他流行摇滚中脱颖而出的受布鲁斯和美国音乐影响很深的一张专辑，也标志着时代风向的变化。The Verve的商业突破专辑《Urban Hymns》和Pulp的转型之作《This Is Hardcore》紧随其后，Pulp也是连续三张专辑入围。 另外还有两张流行摇滚唱片入围，女声乐团Catatonia的《International Velvet》和Take That单飞成员Robbie Williams的首张个人专辑《Life thru a Lens》。98年还入围了多张电子乐唱片，包括吹泡鼻祖Massive Attack的转型作《Mezzanine》，亚裔电子组合Asian Dub Foundation的反种族主义《Rafi's Revenge》，4hero《Two Pages》，电影配乐组合Propellerheads的《Decksandrumsandrockandroll》。
