卡文迪许千辛万苦，终于排除了一切干扰，成功的测量出了万有引力常数。而且在以后的100年里面保持着最高的精度。为了纪念他的杰出成就，电磁学的祖师爷麦克斯韦决定建立一个实验室，恰逢剑桥大学的校长就是卡文迪许家族的后人，第7代德文郡公爵。自然是非常乐意光宗耀祖，赞助了8450英镑的巨款。于是麦克斯韦就在剑桥大学建立了一座卡文迪许实验室。也就是剑桥的物理系。这个实验室名人辈出，85年间，竟然有29位诺贝尔奖获得者。 卡文迪许实验室是近代科学史上第一个社会化和专业化的科学实验室。 这个实验室也标志着，科学大咖们在自家阁楼和地下室搞科研的时代，已经终结了……
